Accessibility statement
This dashboard is an independent project by Dr Stefan Buttigieg presenting data published by the Directorate for Health Information and Research. It is built to be usable with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification and colour-vision adjustments.
Accessibility options built into the dashboard
The Accessibility button in the top navigation opens a settings panel. Choices are stored in your browser only (no account, no server copy) and apply to every page:
- Appearance — light, dark, or follow your operating system setting.
- Chart colours — Default, a red–green safe Okabe–Ito palette (deuteranopia and protanopia), a blue–yellow safe palette (tritanopia), and a high-contrast monochrome palette that separates series by lightness alone.
- Text size — Default, Large, Larger and Largest (up to 150%). Layouts reflow rather than clipping content.
- Always underline links — never rely on colour alone to spot a link.
- Reduce motion — removes transitions and chart animations. The dashboard also honours the operating system
prefers-reduced-motionsetting. - Simplified mobile view — linked from the same panel, or directly at the mobile dashboard. It shows one topic at a time in a single column, with large touch targets, phone-sized charts and tables laid out as stacked cards instead of wide grids.
Charts and tables
Every chart has a matching data table: use the Chart / Table toggle on any indicator card to read the same figures as text that a screen reader can navigate. Charts can show numeric value labels via the Labels toggle, so a series can be read without comparing colours. Series can be filtered individually, and each table can be downloaded as CSV or JSON.
Keyboard and screen reader use
- All navigation, filters, toggles and dialogs are reachable and operable by keyboard.
- Interactive controls have visible focus indicators.
- Menus, dialogs and popovers are built on accessible primitives with correct roles, focus management and Esc dismissal.
- Icon-only buttons carry text labels for screen readers.
- Each page has a single main heading, semantic landmarks and descriptive page titles.
Conformance
The dashboard aims to conform to WCAG 2.2 level AA. Colour contrast, keyboard operation, text resizing, target sizes and non-colour-dependent information have been reviewed manually. Conformance is self-assessed and not yet independently audited, so some content may fall short.
Known limitations
- Dense multi-series charts remain hard to read at very large text sizes; use the table view or the data explorer to compare specific series instead.
- Some table captions and category labels are reproduced verbatim from the source report and can be long or abbreviated.
- The source PDF published by Directorate for Health Information and Research is outside our control and may not be fully accessible.
